Our Story

hunt1Rock Hill Native goes from Dunks to Dents!

By Nicole E. Smith - nsmith@heraldonline.com

Hunt Erwin stands 5 feet, 10 inches tall, but he could dunk a basketball and land 3-pointers like it's no problem.

The Rock Hill native was so good at basketball that he went to Southern Union College in Alabama on scholarship, and played point guard for two years for the Bisons.

A large dent on his black, 1989 drop-top BMW - the result of a hailstorm - changed things.

Erwin loved that car.

"I called my sister in Charleston, crying, 'I got a dent in my car,'" he said. "She said, 'That's fine because the guy who lives besides me is the manager of a dent company.'"

A phone call later, Erwin had decided to enroll in a Dent Wizard class in St. Louis - eight hours a day, two months straight. He graduated first in his class and had the opportunity to go wherever he wanted.

He chose his home - Rock Hill.

That was in the mid-1990s.

In 2001, he opened Dent Out, and years later, when car dealerships need help fixing dents in their cars from hailstorms and other disasters they know to call Erwin.

David Choate, sales manager at Burns Chevrolet Cadillac, said they have been using Erwin for more than eight years.

"He's very good at what he does," he said.

Cam Stewart, general manager of Honda Cars of Rock Hill, said, "we've been using Hunt Erwin and Dent Out for over 10 years. They've done a great job. We've kind of partnered with them in providing that service to our customers. That's what we're trying to do, help people get their cars straight."

Erwin has helped several dealerships, from the local ones to the Honda dealership in Columbia to the Audi manufacturing warehouse in Germany, where he spent two months working on cars that were damaged after a hail storm.

"Once you've been in the business for awhile, people ask you to go places if there is enough work," he said. "(The warehouse) was in the middle of nowhere. I saw windmills, there were trains. It was like a big prairie farm. And on the railroad tracks, they would just put the cars on the trains and send them out."

Erwin has been married to his wife, Kamila, for five years. They have two children, 10-year-old Daniel and 2-year-old Anna, and are expecting their third child. While he doesn't plan on leaving the dent business any time soon, he could pass it on to Daniel one day.

Daniel has accompanied Erwin this week to assess some of the carsdamaged from the weekend's hailstorm.

"He thinks he's going to quit school now and come work with me, but we're going to make him finish high school at least," Erwin said, laughing. "But he knows Daddy's garage will always be open."

And Erwin can't quite forget the car that started it all, even if he wanted to.

Erwin's father, Larry, a former dean of students for York Technical College, drives the 1989 BMW today.

"My daddy was wondering why I threw away a full scholarship and wanted to take this dent class," Erwin, 37, said. "Now he laughs...It worked out good for me."

Erwin's sister has a different reaction.

"She always reminds me of (that phone call) at Christmas time," he said, laughing.
